The 3M Ft-30 Qualitative Fit Testing Kit is designed for use with FFP (Filtering Face Pieces) AKA Dust Masks and Re-useable Half Mask Respirators tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment.
Designed to test that a secure face seal can be achieved, the kit supports workplace respiratory protection programmes, compliance with HSE Guidance INDG479 and International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 16975-3
Kits are not brand specific – can be used for any brand of RPE
Suitable for tight-fitting respirators, excluding full-face masks.

Face fit testing helps confirm that a respirator can achieve an effective seal against the wearer’s face. This is important because even high-quality respiratory protection can fail to perform correctly if the mask does not fit properly or is worn incorrectly.
The 3M FT-30 kit uses a qualitative bitter taste test method. During the test, a hood and collar are placed around the wearer’s head to create a controlled test area. A bitter-tasting solution is then introduced using a nebuliser. If the wearer can detect the bitter taste while wearing the respirator, this may indicate that the mask seal is not adequate.
This makes the kit a practical option for checking the fit of selected respiratory protection and supporting staff training. It can help users understand the importance of correct mask fitting, proper positioning, and achieving a reliable face seal before entering environments where respiratory protection is required.
